What Onward does

Onward is an independent Canadian service. We are not the IRS or any government. We fill out US IRS Form 8840 (Closer Connection Exception Statement) from the answers you give us. You download it, then print it, sign it in pen and mail it to the IRS yourself. We don't sign, print, mail or file anything for you.

Not tax or legal advice

We fill out forms from your answers and don't provide tax or legal advice. Our free check is a guide based on the IRS day-count formula. If you have US income, applied for a green card, or were in the US 183 days or more in the year, please speak with a cross-border tax professional.

Your answers

You are responsible for making sure your answers are true and complete, including for anyone you add to your order. Each person signs their own Form 8840 under penalty of perjury, and is responsible for mailing it to the IRS by the deadline.

Prices and payment

Prices are in Canadian dollars and shown before you pay: $6.98 for you, plus $3 for each person filing with you. The eligibility check is free. We only charge for people who need to file.

Refunds

If you're not happy, ask within 30 days of paying and we'll refund the full amount. No questions asked.

Mailing your form

You mail your signed form to the IRS yourself. Our instructions show the IRS address and postage we understand to be correct, but check them before you mail. We can't control the post or how long the IRS takes to process forms.

Limits of our responsibility

We work hard to fill out your form correctly from your answers, but we can’t guarantee how the IRS will treat it. As far as the law allows, we aren’t responsible for indirect losses, such as penalties, interest or tax that result from wrong or incomplete answers, a form mailed late or lost in the post, or a change in IRS rules. If we are responsible for a loss, the most we will owe is what you paid us for that filing. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection laws that can’t be waived.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there.
