Form 8840 for past years
Checked for the 2026 tax year · Updated October 2026
Use the form for the year you’re filing for. Each year has its own Form 8840 with the year printed at the top. These deadlines have passed, so read what a late form means before you mail one.
Official forms by year
Unchanged copies of the official IRS forms. They're also on the IRS's prior year forms page. Each PDF is 4 pages: 2 pages of form, then instructions. Only mail the 2 form pages.
Use the form for that year
Each Form 8840 covers one year, with the year printed at the top. For an older year, use that year's form; a newer one won't do. The day count for each year adds that year's US days, a third of the year before and a sixth of the year before that. The day calculator works for any year.
Filing for a year that's past its deadline
A late Form 8840 isn't accepted automatically. The IRS can refuse it unless you show clear and convincing evidence that you took reasonable steps to learn about the filing rules and significant steps to follow them. Before you mail one, read what a late form means, and speak with a cross-border tax professional, especially if more than one year is missing.

Onward is an independent Canadian service, not the IRS. This page explains the rules in plain terms; it isn't tax or legal advice. If your situation is unusual, speak with a cross-border tax professional.
